Lebanon: Dabke Dancing and Sprouted Seeds

In Lebanon, Christmas combines church services and family meals with a remarkably creative decorative tradition: sprouting grains or legumes ahead of the holiday and placing the green shoots around a Nativity scene.

How Christmas is celebrated

Some families plant wheat, lentils or chickpeas in small dishes weeks before Christmas, using the fresh growth to adorn the manger. Carols, visits and neighborhood decorations are important in many Christian communities. Dabke is a popular Levantine group dance that may appear at festive gatherings, but it is not limited to Christmas.

What is on the festive table?

Holiday tables vary by community and may feature shared mezze, roasts, sweets and family specialties. The sprouted-seed custom is about symbolism and preparation rather than a particular meal.

Where to experience the season

Byblos is known for its old harbor streets and past festive installations; Beirut offers churches, shops and neighborhoods with their own seasonal character. Do not assume any one lighting display is guaranteed annually.

Planning a Christmas visit

Check current security, access and official travel information before making plans. Religious celebrations may be modest or altered depending on local conditions.

Local context matters

Lebanon has multiple Christian denominations and other faith communities; Christmas customs are not identical across the country.

Before you make travel plans
