इस वर्ष धनतेरस सुख-समृद्घि देने वाली होगी। ज्योतिषाचार्यों के अनुसार उत्तरा फाल्गुनी नक्षत्र व सोमवार के संयोग से श्रीवत्स योगाः बन रहा है, यह महत्वपूर्ण योग सुख-समृद्घि देने वाला होता है। धनतेरस आयुर्वेद के अधिष्ठाता भगवान धन्वंतरि की जयंती भी है। इस दिन धन्वंतरि पूजन की शास्त्रोक्त मान्यता है। लोक परंपरा अनुसार धनतेरस पर आभूषण, बर्तन या गृह उपयोगी वस्तुएं खरीदी जाती हैं। इस दृष्टिकोण से भी इस वर्ष धनतेरस शुभ है।


पांच दिवसीय दीपावली पर्व का आरंभ धन त्रयोदशी से होता है। इस दिन सायंकाल घर के मुख्य द्वार पर यमराज के निमित्त एक अन्न से भरे पात्र में दक्षिण मुख करके दीपक रखने एवं उसका पूजन करके प्रज्ज्वलित करने एवं यमराज से प्रार्थना करने पर असामयिक मृत्यु से बचा जा सकता है।


धनतेरस के दिन भगवान धन्वंतरि का जन्म हुआ था। समुद्र मंथन के समय इसी दिन धन्वंतरि सभी रोगों के लिए औषधि कलश में लेकर प्रकट हुए थे। अतः इस दिन भगवान धन्वंतरि का पूजन श्रद्धापूर्वक करना चाहिए जिससे दीर्घ जीवन एवं आरोग्य की प्राप्ति होती है।


धनतेरस के दिन अपनी शक्ति अनुसार बर्तन क्रय करके घर लाना चाहिए एवं उसका पूजन करके प्रथम उपयोग भगवान के लिए करने से धन-धान्य की कमी वर्षपर्यंत नहीं रहती है।


धनतेरस के लिए बाजार पूरी तरह से तैयार हैं। शुभ मुहूर्त में सराफा और बर्तन बाजार में जमकर खरीदी होगी। भगवान धन्वंतरि का पूजन भी होगा। सुख समृद्धि धन-धान्य की कामना की जाएगी। परिवार में संपत्ति व धनलक्ष्मी की पूजा होगी। वाहनों और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वस्तुओं की दुकानों पर भी भीड़ उमड़ेगी।


धनतेरस के संबंध में पं. आनंदशंकर व्यास के अनुसार धनतेरस पर उत्तरा फाल्गुनी नक्षत्र व सोमवार से श्रीवत्स योगाः बन रहा है। यह महत्वपूर्ण योग है। सुख-समृद्घि देने वाला है। परंपरानुसार धनतेरस पर आभूषण, बर्तन व गृह उपयोगी वस्तुएं खरीदी जाती हैं। इस धनतेरस पर शुभ मुहूर्त में इन वस्तुओं के खरीदने से ये उत्तम फल देगी। आयुर्वेद से जुड़े लोग धन्वंतरि पूजन भी करेंगे।


कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की द्वादशी तिथि पर क्रमशः तिथि उत्तरार्द्घ अनुक्रम में गोवत्स द्वादशी, सोम प्रदोष तथा धनतेरस का संयुक्त क्रम आ रहा है। निर्णय सिंधु की मान्यता के अनुसार इस दिन यम तर्पण तथा दीपदान की परंपरा त्रिरात्रिकाल मानी जाती है। -पं. अमर डब्बावाला


धनतेरस मूल रूप से भगवान धन्वंतरि की जयंती है। इस दिन धन खरीदने का कहीं कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। धन्वंतरि के आगे धन शब्द से लोक परंपरा में इस दिन धन (आभूषण, बर्तन आदि) खरीदने की मान्यता जुड़ गई है। मूल रूप से चौमासा (वर्षाकाल) में वर्षाजनित रोगों से मुक्ति के लिए भगवान धन्वंतरि का पूजन किया जाना चाहिए।

There is a very intersting historic story about the 16-year-old son of King Hima behind this occasion of Dhanteras .

According to his horoscope he would die by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage.

But his newly wed wife's cleverness and detremination saved him.

On that particular day, his wife did not let him sleep and kept him awake by singing songs and telling him stories.

She also gathered all her ornament, gold and silver coins and laid it in a heap at the threshold of there room and lit numerous earthen lamps all over .

When Yama(the god of Death) arrived at the prince’s doorstep in the form of a Snake he got blinded by the vibrance of lamps and jewelery.

He was not able to enter the Prince's room, so he climbed on top of the heap of gold coins and sat there the whole night listening to the stories and songs.

As the morning approached he went away without taking Prince's life.

Thus, the young prince life was saved by the intelligence of his new bride, and the day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras.

And this is one of the reason people buy Gold on the auspicious day of Dhanteras.

Dhanteras falls on the 13th day of the Krishna Paksh and the 14th day is also called 'Yamadeepdaan' as the ladies of the house lights deep( earthen lamps) and

these are kept burning throughout the night honoring Yama.


The epic of "Samudramanthan" , that means churning of the ocean is also believed to be associated with Dhanteras.

It is believed that when the Gods and demons were churning the ocean for "amrit" or nectar, Dhanvantri appeared with a glowing Kalash of amrit.
