America's Best Halloween Destinations: Haunted Towns, Festivals and Historic Celebrations

From the Witch City to the Big Easy, these are the American towns where Halloween isn't one night : it's a whole season of parades, ghost tours and history.

Key takeaways

  • Salem, MA is America's Halloween capital : and 2026 is its 400th anniversary.
  • Sleepy Hollow, NY combines Washington Irving's legend with the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze (Sept 18–Nov 8, 2026).
  • New Orleans, Savannah and St. Augustine are the South's haunted-history trio.
  • Book early and midweek: October weekends in Halloween towns sell out months ahead.

For most of the country, Halloween is a single evening of trick-or-treating. In a handful of American towns, it's an entire season : weeks of parades, lantern-lit tours, festivals and history that's genuinely haunting. These are the places to go when you want to experience Halloween at full volume.

Planning note: Dates and events below are for 2026 where confirmed. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so the final weekend will be exceptionally busy everywhere. Always check official sites before you travel.

1. Salem, Massachusetts : the Witch City

No town in America owns Halloween like Salem. The infamous witch trials of 1692 turned it into a symbol, and today the city embraces that history with museums, memorials, ghost tours and a month-long festival, Salem Haunted Happenings, that draws more than a million visitors each year.

2026 is special: Salem marks its 400th anniversary, celebrated with a record-attempt gathering of witch hats on Derby Wharf and a 400-drone show over the North River on Halloween night.

2. Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley, New York

Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow turned this Hudson River village into a permanent Halloween setting. Visit the Old Dutch Church and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Irving himself is buried, and see the region's famous seasonal events. Historic Hudson Valley's Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, featuring thousands of hand-carved pumpkins, runs September 18 to November 8, 2026, alongside dramatic readings of Irving's Legend and other "Halloween in Sleepy Hollow" events.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans treats death with color, music and ceremony all year round, and Halloween is a natural fit. Expect ghost and vampire tours of the French Quarter, above-ground "cities of the dead," voodoo history and costumed crowds on Frenchmen Street. The Krewe of BOO!, the city's official Halloween parade, rolls on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.

4. Savannah, Georgia

Moss-draped squares, antebellum mansions and some of the most atmospheric cemeteries in America make Savannah a ghost-tour capital. Walk Bonaventure Cemetery by day and take a lantern-lit tour of the historic district by night.

5. St. Augustine, Florida

The oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the continental U.S. (founded 1565) has had more than four centuries to collect ghost stories. Its Spanish fort, lighthouse and old jail all feature on popular ghost tours.

Full guide: St. Augustine, Florida.

6. New York City

The Village Halloween Parade is usually described as the country's largest Halloween parade, with tens of thousands of costumed marchers. In 2026 its 53rd edition steps off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, with the theme "Body & Soul." Anyone in costume can march. Elsewhere in the city, look for haunted houses, cemetery tours and Halloween dog parades.

7. Anoka, Minnesota

Anoka calls itself the "Halloween Capital of the World." In 1920 it organized one of the first town-wide Halloween celebrations in America to keep young people from pranking, and it has celebrated with parades and community events ever since. It's a perfect small-town alternative to the crowds of Salem. More in Halloween in the Midwest.

8. Theme-park Halloween in Florida and California

Orlando and Southern California host some of the country's most elaborate Halloween events:

Travel tips for Halloween towns

  1. Book early. Hotels in Salem and Sleepy Hollow can sell out months in advance for October weekends.
  2. Go midweek if you can : prices are lower and crowds manageable.
  3. Use public transit where possible; parking is scarce in historic towns.
  4. Reserve tours and timed tickets in advance.
  5. Pack a costume : in many of these towns, you'll be in the minority without one.
  6. Respect the history. Many sites, like Salem's memorials or historic cemeteries, commemorate real people.

Build a road trip

Several of these destinations combine beautifully. New England pairs Salem and Sleepy Hollow with peak foliage; the South links Savannah, St. Augustine and Charleston; California pairs theme parks with pumpkin festivals.
