Why this direction? Foliage peaks first in the north and at elevation, so heading north early in the week and finishing on the coast keeps you near peak color.

Day 1: Sleepy Hollow, New York

Start in the village that Washington Irving made famous. Visit the Old Dutch Church and wander Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Irving is buried. In the evening, see Historic Hudson Valley's Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze : thousands of carved, glowing pumpkins : which runs September 18 to November 8, 2026. Book timed tickets well in advance. Full guide: Sleepy Hollow, New York.

Day 2: The Hudson Valley to the Berkshires

Drive north through Hudson Valley apple country, stopping at orchards and farm stands. Cross into western Massachusetts to the Berkshires, where hillside towns like Lenox and Stockbridge look straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting (his museum is in Stockbridge). Stay overnight in an old inn.

Day 3: Into southern Vermont

Head north into Vermont on scenic back roads. Look for covered bridges, steepled villages and roadside stands selling cider, pumpkins and maple syrup. Towns like Manchester and Woodstock make perfect overnight stops.

Day 4: Heart of Vermont

Spend the day on foliage drives : scenic routes through the Green Mountains are spectacular in early October. Stop at a cider mill for fresh cider and cider donuts, and look for pumpkin displays on village greens. Overnight near Stowe or Waterbury.

Day 5: New Hampshire's White Mountains

Cross into New Hampshire and drive the Kancamagus Highway, one of America's most celebrated foliage routes, winding about 34 miles through the White Mountain National Forest past waterfalls, overlooks and rivers. Pull over at scenic overlooks and short trails.

Day 6: Concord and Salem

Head south to Concord, Massachusetts, and its other Sleepy Hollow: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Authors' Ridge holds the graves of Emerson, Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It's a quiet, beautiful place on an autumn afternoon.

Then drive to Salem, the Witch City. Walk the Witch Trials Memorial, the Old Burying Point and the Witch House, then take an evening ghost tour. In 2026 Salem celebrates its 400th anniversary during Haunted Happenings. Book lodging months ahead, or stay in Boston and take the train. Day 7: Choose your finale

Option A: Providence, Rhode Island

Providence was home to horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, buried in Swan Point Cemetery. In autumn, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo displays thousands of artistically carved pumpkins along an illuminated trail : check current-year dates and tickets.

Option B: Fall River, Massachusetts

Visit the Lizzie Borden House, scene of the infamous 1892 murders, now a museum and bed-and-breakfast offering tours and overnight stays for the brave.

Option C: More Salem

Spend another day in Salem and nearby Marblehead, a harbor town with colonial streets and an old burial hill overlooking the sea.
