What Shastra Puja honors
On Vijayadashami, many communities clean, decorate and worship weapons, tools, vehicles, machinery, books or work instruments. The exact objects differ by occupation and region.
A craftsperson may honor tools, a driver a vehicle, a musician an instrument, an office worker a laptop or books. The underlying idea is respect for disciplined skill and for the means through which duty is performed.
From battlefield to workplace
Historically, martial communities naturally emphasized arms and readiness. Over time, the principle extended to occupational tools and equipment. This broader interpretation allows the ritual to remain meaningful in modern households and businesses.
The ceremony is therefore less about the object alone and more about the ethical use of capability.
A practical home observance
Clean the objects first, arrange them respectfully, decorate simply with flowers or turmeric-kumkum if that fits your family tradition, offer a short prayer of gratitude, and avoid using sacred or dangerous objects casually during the ritual.
For machinery, vehicles and electrical equipment, safety comes first. Symbolic worship should never require unsafe handling.
The modern lesson
Tools multiply human power. Vijayadashami asks a useful question: when power increases, does responsibility increase too? Honoring an instrument can become a reminder to maintain it well, use it honestly and avoid harm.
That principle is as relevant to software, medical equipment and industrial machines as it is to traditional weapons.
