What Vidyarambham means
Vidyarambham literally refers to the beginning of learning. In several southern Indian traditions, children are ceremonially introduced to letters on Vijayadashami, often after Navaratri observances connected with Saraswati and learning.
The ceremony emphasizes reverence for knowledge before achievement.
Writing the first letters
Customs vary, but the child may trace or write letters with guidance from a parent, teacher, priest or respected elder. The material can be rice, sand, a slate or another symbolic surface.
The exact script matters less than the idea that learning begins with humility and blessing.

Vijayadashami is also considered an auspicious time to begin music, dance and other arts. Existing students may honor instruments and teachers before resuming practice.
