Preparation for Chhath Puja is highly meticulous. The festival requires specific traditional items (Samagri), most of which are organic, eco-friendly, and tied to agricultural harvests. Missing even a single item can disrupt the Puja Vidhi, so families prepare this list well in advance.

Baskets and Containers

  • Daura: A large, deep basket woven from bamboo. It is used to carry all the offerings to the Ghat.
  • Soop: Winnowing baskets made of bamboo or brass. These are directly held by the Vrati to offer Arghya to the Sun. (Typically, 2 to 5 Soops are required depending on family traditions).
  • Kalsi / Lota: A brass or earthen pot used to pour holy water and milk during the Arghya.

Fruits and Vegetables (The Harvest Offering)

Chhath demands the freshest, unblemished seasonal fruits:

  • Alta / Mahawar: Red dye applied to the feet of the Vrati.
