The Sacred Bamboo Vessels: Daura and Soop
The Daura (a large, deep basket) and the Soop (a flat winnowing tray) are synonymous with the visual identity of Chhath Puja. They are traditionally woven from natural bamboo.
Why Bamboo?
Bamboo is highly revered for its pure, eco-friendly, and biodegradable nature. Using bamboo connects the festival directly to local artisans and rural economies, reinforcing the egalitarian spirit of Chhath.
Their Ritual Purpose
- Daura: Acts as the primary carrier. The male head of the family traditionally carries the heavy, Prasad-filled Daura on his head barefoot to the ghat, symbolizing submission to the divine.
- Soop: The Vrati holds the Soop: filled with Thekua, diyas, and fruits: directly toward the sun while standing in the water to offer the Arghya.
