Bananas: A Symbol of Purity and Prosperity

Walk past any Chhath Ghat, and you will see massive clusters (ghaud) of green and yellow bananas overflowing from the bamboo baskets.

Significance of the Offering

In Hindu traditions, the banana plant is considered highly sacred, often associated with Lord Vishnu and fertility. During Chhath, individual bananas are never plucked; an entire, intact cluster is offered. This symbolizes family unity, abundance, and unbroken lineage.

Bananas are also considered one of the purest fruits since they grow far above the ground and are protected by thick peels, ensuring they remain untouched by impurities before being offered to the deity.
