The Girmitiya Legacy: Chhath Across Oceans

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of indentured laborers (Girmitiyas) from Bihar and Eastern UP were sent by the British to work on sugar plantations in Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, and Guyana. They took nothing but their faith with them.

Preserving the Rituals

Today, Chhath Puja is a national celebration in Mauritius. Devotees gather at oceanic beaches and local rivers, singing traditional Bhojpuri Chhath Geet passed down orally for over a century. Despite being oceans away from the Ganges, the spiritual devotion to Surya Dev remains entirely intact.
