Evolution of the Festival

Rooted in the early Vedic worship of elemental gods (Sun, Water, Fire), the festival found its mythological anchors in the epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Historically confined to the agrarian societies of the Magadh and Mithila regions (modern-day Bihar), the massive internal migration of the 20th and 21st centuries transformed it from a regional agrarian ritual to a major urban and global celebration.
